Men’s rugby defeated Rugby East foe Iona College, 56-12, on Saturday. The win improves the team to 7-2 on the season (5-1, Rugby East).

Penn State started the game strong, scoring six unanswered tries. Players dotting down for the Nittany Lions included Chris Burian, Jimmy Ronan, Connor Cassidy, Malcolm May (2), and Kevin Trotter.

The Nittany Lions led 24-0 at half-time.

Iona broke the try line for the first time in the middle of the second half, making the score 36-7.

Three more tries and a penalty goal from Penn State outlasted Iona’s second try to cap the game at, 56-12.

As a result of the win, Penn State has a chance to capture the Rugby East conference title for the first time since 2007.

The Nittany Lions must defeat Kutztown to capture the conference crown, who travels to University Park for the final matchup of the Fall slate.

Kickoff against Kutztown, at West Campus Fields, is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday.

The Nittany Lions also captured an abbreviated reserve-side match against Iona, 24-5.

Following the Kutztown match, Penn State will turn its attention to the Varsity Cup, after becoming the 16th team to join the elite competition. The opening round of the Varsity Cup is scheduled for April 9.

The Spring schedule is still being finalized and will be released in the coming weeks.
