2012 Penn State Rugby Golf Tournament Information

| 0 Comments | 0 TrackBacks
Group Pre.JPGThe Penn State Rugby program will host it's 2012 Golf Tournament on Sunday June 10th on the Penn State Blue Golf Course.

In it's third year, this annual event is hoped to become one of the highlights of each year, providing alumni, family, and friends of Penn State Rugby with the opportunity to spend a beautiful summer day together, have A LOT of laughs, and provide the program with some much needed funding.

Participants, volunteers, sponsors, and prize donations are all welcomed and needed. Although the program has grown by leaps in bounds both on and off the pitch, the direct financial support for program operations from the University has not not changed in more than 10 years. With no indication that this will change in the near future, the program still depends upon player dues, team fundraisers, donations, sponsorships, and events like this to secure nearly 90% of it's annual operating budget needs.

With both our mens and womens teams once again competing in their respective National Championship Playoffs, financial support from events such as this are even more critical.

Won't you please come on back to Happy Valley, see some old friends, participate in this very worth while event, and help support Penn State Rugby.

See below for information about the event, to register to play, provide a sponsorship, or to donate prizes or just your time.

Big Weekend for Men's Team

| 0 Comments | 0 TrackBacks
Following their 44-37 playoff clinching victory over Kutztown last weekend, the stage is set for the battle of the unbeatens to close out the spring league season.

The # 7 Nittany Lion Ruggers will face off against # 6 Army in Happy Valley this coming Saturday with much more than Rugby East conference supremacy at stake. The winner will earn the #1 conference seed heading into the National Championship quarterfinals, and as such will get to HOST that match at HOME!

Penn State versus Army has continued to grow into a fantastic rivalry over the past several years, as both fight for the claim to best in the East year after year. But it doesn't stop there, with PSU Rugby Alumni Rich Pohlidal as their head coach, and Justin "Pip" Hundley as his assistant, I'm sure you can see why this match means so much, and the date ends up circled on both team's calendars at the beginning of the season.

"Qualifying for the National Tournament last weekend meant a lot to the team, but defeating Army, and earning the right to host their first round playoff matchup would be important to the program as well" stated assistant coach Chris Amoratis. "Our first team goal for this spring season was to go undefeated in Rugby East, to earn a bonus point for trys scored every week, and to earn a home playoff match" added head coach Don Ferrell. "The team is one big step away from reaching that goal, and they are very focused right now".

The match will be played this Saturday on West Pitch at 5:00pm. The match time has been moved back to accommodate (and hopefully catch some additional fans from) the Blue / White game fans. So come on out this weekend, check out the football game, then  come and see two of the best collegiate rugby programs in the country go to battle. With the stakes as high as they are, it is sure to be one of the best matches of the year!!

Match times set for final two home matches

| 0 Comments | 0 TrackBacks
Match times have been set for the final two matches of the spring season, both of which will be played at home on West Fields.

4/14 - Kutztown University - 1:00pm A side Kickoff, B side to follow immediately after.

4/21 - US Military Academy - 5:00pm A side Kickoff, B side to follow immediately after.

Both are extremely important matches, with serious playoff implications.

A win against rival Kutztown will secure a spot in the National playoffs for Penn State. Kutztown must win to have a shot at the playoffs, so they will be very inspired.

Although Kutztown can certainly not be overlooked, the Army match will also definitely be played for a playoff birth, and may very well determine the top seed from the East, and a home quarterfinal match in the National Championship playoffs.

So come out and support the team, as the look to defend their home turf, qualify for Nationals, and hopefully secure a home playoff match!

The Penn State men's team continued their winning ways, defeating Ohio State 60-17 to begin the Easter weekend.

Playing their first home league match since last spring, the team shook off a slower than desired start to finish the match running away from the Buckeye first XV.

Tallying 9 tries in total, it was a team effort with the forwards crossing 5 times, and the backs 4. Senior fullback Joe Baker led all scorers with 15 points, going 6 for 9 on conversions, and adding a penalty goal as well.

Following the A match, the B side put up similar numbers in another convincing victory.

Next up for the undefeated Nittany Lion ruggers is (3-1)Kutztown at home this coming weekend.

Kickoff for the A match will be 1:00pm.

Come on out and support the team, as they look to clinch a birth in the playoffs with a defeat of Kutztown.

Las Vegas trip successful

The Penn State men's rugby team enjoyed a successful trip to the Las Vegas Invitational, playing 4 much needed matches in 3 days.

The trip, which is becoming an annual event, serves as the first outdoor matches of the semester for the team, and is used to prepare them for the spring season, team bonding, and to measure ourselves against some of the best competition we can find.

The trip opened with a match against the "top of the food chain" as the Nittany Lion ruggers took on BYU. "We go into this match every year knowing that it will be an incredible challenge, but it is one that we gladly face knowing that to be the best, you must compete against the best", stated assistant coach Chris Amoratis. "Being our very first match of the season, and facing an opponent the caliber of BYU who has already played several matches, obviously there are going to be difficulties, nerves, and a bit of rust to work through" stated head coach Don Ferrell, "but we go out there with very specific goals in place, and our kids met or exceeded pretty much all of them".

Although coming out on the short end of the scoreboard, there were many positives to take away from this opening match. PSU enjoyed the lion's share of territory and possession, we matched them physically, held our own and even dominated at times in the battle of the set pieces, put a very good rugby team under a lot of pressure, and limited our turnovers and penalties. In fact, were it not for one or two incredible individual performances on the part of BYU, and some early season mistakes by PSU, the scoreline would have been much closer. A fact not lost on the players, and something that will surely be on their minds if the two teams meet again in the post season.

The second match of the tour found our B/C side facing the A side of Division 1A opponent Arizona instead of the B side who they were supposed to play. The young mixed PSU side, which included many players brand new to the program this year fought admirably, but in the end were no match for a Division 1A A side. They showed a lot of heart, and class in the unplanned encounter, and will surely be better for it as they continue to develop.

Our final day of competition (the fourth day of the trip) saw both the A and B/C sides from PSU facing yet another D1A program in Arizona State University. It was exciting to face yet another top program who we do not usually get a chance to play during our Spring Competitive season, and the boys were certainly looking to end the "tour" on a high note.

The day began with a clash of B sides at 8:00am. Arizona State was definitely fired up for the challenge, and jumped out to a 20 point lead in the first half. However the young PSU side regrouped during the break, and came back onto the pitch firing on all cylinders. They scored 29 unanswered points in the second stanza to finish the match with a well earned 9 point victory!

Thumbnail image for DSC_0608.JPGThe final match of the trip saw the A side donning their brand new "throwback jerseys" which honor Marshall K. Sturm for the very first time. The kids absolutely loved wearing an original PSU Rugby jersey replica, and were even prouder to have Marshall's initials on their sleeve as they took the pitch.

The match that ensued provided all in attendance with a true glimpse of what this 2011/2012 top squad is capable of, as from the opening kickoff they controlled the match in pretty much all phases. Of particular note was the performance of the forward pack who had given their counterparts from BYU so much trouble in the opening match. Against Arizona State the PSU pack dominated the set pieces, providing stable ball consistently from our own sets, and stealing or disrupting many of those for our opposition. Although we stressed that the play was far more important than the scoreline in all of these matches, ending with a strong team victory was well received by players, staff, and fans alike.

"Clearly we still have a lot of work to do to get where we want to be, but this was a good trip for us in that we were able to meet the goals we set before we left, and got in some match time against some quality opponents" concluded Ferrell, "we have a few weeks left to prepare before our first league match, and because of this experience we have a strong handle on specific things we need to improve upon. That's exactly why we make a trip like this."

The team still has a few matches scheduled in the month before the National D1A competition begins. With matches against Old Blue, and a strong PSU Rugby Alumni side on the schedule in the coming weeks, the staff feels confident that the team will be ready for their season opener against the University of Delaware on March 17th in Wilmington!

Thanks to our opponents and the LVI for the matches, and to all the parents, alumni, and friends who made the journey to support us. The competitive season will begin before we know it, and we sincerely hope to see you on the touchline at a match this spring!!
