The Penn State Women headed to DC Ruggerfest over the weekend looking for some competitive challenges and the opportunity to develop depth in preparation for spring playoffs.

The program entered into the women’s premier and women’s open division playing 4 close games Saturday starting with Beantown and Raleigh B and finishing the day vs NYRC and James River.   The premier side ground out a come from behind win against Beantown 19-12 while the open side defeated Raleigh B in a similar fashion 17-5 to start the day.  The open team kicked off next vs James River and with some great continuity and ball movement saw a larger score line of 55-7 before the premier team dropped a physical battle 12-5 to NYRC.

The open divisions two wins put them into the semi final versus DC Furies B while the premier divisions 1 and 1 record matched them up against Raleigh for the round of games on Sunday.  The open team would successfully defeat DC Furies B to advance to the open division final vs the Olde Girls while the premier team would fall to eventual premier champion Raleigh 8-5.  The open team came back from a 24-5 deficit but couldn’t quite seal the victory and fell 21-24 for the final game of the tournament.

Senior Captain, Fran Schaefer said “The tournament really challenged us at the point of contact and gave everyone significant playing time.  Every game we get to play together gives us a great opportunity to improve and unify. The tournament was just what we needed going into spring playoffs.”  The Nittany Lion’s next contest will be at home at 1pm vs the Pittsburgh Angels this Saturday April 8th followed by the 2nd leg of the Big 10 7s at home on April 9th.
