The season has started pretty well for the women’s team.  We have had 2 good wins against quality teams from the midwest, and this weekend we face our first league opponent, West Chester University.  West Chester is a varsity program and a strong recruiter in the Philadelphia area, so many local high school players think about both  programs.  While we have always won against West Chester since they have turned varsity, there have been a couple of times when they have pushed us to the edge.  As new members of the EPRU, we expect another spirited display from West Chester and a good test to see where we are.

The team managed to play over 30 players in the two A side games we have had.  This demonstrates the depth we have in the squad.  We have 45 active players, all of which are good rugby players.  Our incoming freshman class are the best we have ever had.  We have over 10 high school players that have come and will compete for traveling spots in the spring.  We have a number of injuries and when everyone comes back, the competition will be fierce for those travel spots.

We have just started our on-campus recruiting and are looking to pick up at least 10 new players to the game.  High school rugby has improved significantly, but we are still looking for an athlete that is new to the sport.    Deven Owsiany, the current MVP of the National Championships, did not start playing until the spring of her sophomore year.  We have had about 40 players show interest in the program and some of them will get their first real game this weekend!

See you this weekend at West Chester!

Cheers,

Pete
