Penn State Women’s Rugby took the field for the first time this season against another team and finished the beautiful weekend 3-0. On Saturday, the team faced Michigan and ECU, proving four weeks of hard work paid off. The game against Michigan (KO 10am) gave many returning and new players to PSUWRFC the chance to finally wear the blue and white jersey with the famous crest and hit players they didn’t know. The first huddle of the day must have inspired the team, for the Lions demonstrated consistent intensity, powerful scrums, and many breaks through the opposing defensive line. Penn State finished the game with a 48-0 win.
After a short break, Penn State took the field again against ECU. Facing a more physical team, the Lions continue to score tries by positions all over the field. ECU scores three tries throughout the game, one off an interception. Over 45 players took the field on Saturday, which gave some players the chance to try out new positions, and new successful combinations. The Lions finish the second game of the day 74-15
On Sunday, parents and players came out again to the West pitch to support the developmental squad as they faced Allegheny College (KO 2pm). This game gave many brand new players the chance to take the field for the first time ever as a rugby player. All of them did an excellent job as they mixed with more experienced players, most of whom were trying out new positions on the field. Ref and Coach Peter Steinberg helped explain the penalties and the Rookies looked as if they have been playing for years and not just a few weeks! A few Penn State players end up playing for the opposition due to injuries witch caused some interesting plays. Lions finish the game 30something-3.
Great job to all players this past weekend, both returning and new, and a special thanks to all the parents who helped make it an awesome Penn State Rugby weekend!
