With only three games remaining in the season, Penn State (3-1) will be hosting only its second home match of the season, facing Rutgers (0-4). Kickoff is set for 1 PM on Saturday at the West Campus Fields.
The contest will be the first ever contested match between the two teams despite both squads meeting last fall during the regular season. Rutgers joined the Mid-Atlantic Rugby Football Union last season, which forced the first meeting last season. The match was forfeited in favor of the Lions.
The Scarlet Knights come to University Park winless, but coming off its closest contest of the season. Rutgers fell to Dartmouth 31-34 last weekend in Piscataway, NJ, eliminating it from playoff contention.
Penn State is also coming off of a close contest, sneaking out of Columbus last Saturday with a 22-17 victory. The match saw Penn State jump out to an early 17-7 lead, before seeing a surge from the Buckeyes, forcing the Lions to make numerous stops in the final minutes to preserve the win. Ohio State has also been eliminated from post-season contention, having fallen to 0-4 on the season.
There will be a lot on the line for this weekend’s contest as Penn State is currently on the cusp of being removed from the post-season picture as well. A loss from the Lions coupled with wins from Army and Navy would eliminate Penn State.
Army travels to Ohio State as Navy plays at Dartmouth.
A B-side match is scheduled between the Scarlet Knights and Lions. Kickoff of that match will take place following the conclusion of the first contest.
