Penn State is the most successful women’s collegiate program in the country. 5 National Championships and 13 National Championship appearences in 15 years was a testament to consistent excellence. However the program had never won back-to-back National Titles…..until today! In a very clinical performance, Penn State put away Stanford 24-7 to win our 6th title, and our first ever back to back. It was a strong team performance led by MVP center Deven Owsiany.

It was a strange game and did not go the way that we expected. Concerned about Stanfords play at the breakdown, but expecting to dominate in the scrums the opposite happened. Stanford caused us lots of problems at the scrum, while we had the edge at the breakdown. However the dominant part of the game was our defense. Led by Deven and center partner Meghan Byrnes, Penn State consistently prevented Stanford from being able to move the ball wide. Even when speedster wing Jess Watkins made breaks she was chased down 3 times by wing Rachael Muir!

It was a great performance for a team that had to overcome a lot of challenges. The game will be available online and we will post a link. Check back for more reviews of the season and a preview of next year over the next week.
